Over the long weekend Eric and I had some time to explore a little more of our hometown. We had heard about the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour from family, and with no plans and perfect weather we decided to give it a chance. I have to say, it was a lot of fun!
The boat takes you through the Winter Park chain of lakes and a few canals. We learned that those canals were actually developed and used by the Seminole Indians with their dug out canoes. So cool! Touring and looking at different homes has always been fun to me, and this boat tour takes you along the edge of the lakes to view the mansions up close. Not to drop names or anything, but we even saw the former homes of Tom Hanks and Mr. Rogers (from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood). As much as I loved seeing the beautiful homes and landscapes on the lake, my favorite part was going through the canals. They are just narrow enough for one boat at a time, leading you under bridges and a never ending canopy of towering live oaks. It was so picturesque.
The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour has been running everyday for some 80 years. They have tours from 10am to 4pm on the hour, first come first serve. My one piece of advice would be to bring a sweater or coat to counter the chilly wind on the boat. But in case you forget, they do have fleece blankets at each seat.
